What is the difference between Hastelloy C22 and C276?

Hastelloy C276 has slightly higher yield strength and ultimate tensile strength than Hastelloy C22. However, Hastelloy C22 has better formability and weldability, making it the preferred choice for applications requiring complex shapes and welding.

Incoloy 825 vs Hastelloy C276 – What's the Difference?

Incoloy 825 vs Hastelloy C276 – Composition

Incoloy 825, also known as UNS N08825, is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with the addition of molybdenum, copper, and titanium. Its high nickel content, typically between 47% and 53%, provides excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments. The addition of molybdenum enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, while the copper and titanium improve its stability and weldability.

On the other hand, Hastelloy C276 (or UNS N10276) is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy with the addition of tungsten. Its higher nickel content, typically around 57%, makes it more corrosion resistant. The high molybdenum content, combined with the tungsten, gives it excellent resistance to oxidizing and reducing acids, making it ideal for handling highly corrosive media.

Incoloy 825 vs Hastelloy C276 – Properties

Both alloys exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, but their specific properties vary depending on environmental conditions. Incoloy 825 alloy exhibits good resistance to sulfuric and phosphoric acids as well as chloride-containing environments. It also has good weldability and formability and can be easily processed into complex shapes.

On the other hand, Hastelloy C276 is known for its excellent resistance to hydrochloric, sulfuric, and nitric acids, even at elevated temperatures. The alloy also exhibits excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking and pitting, making it a top choice for handling corrosive chemicals and acids.

In terms of mechanical properties, both alloys offer high strength and good ductility. However, Hastelloy C276 has slightly higher tensile and yield strengths than Incoloy 825, making it more suitable for applications that require superior structural integrity.

Incoloy 825 vs Hastelloy C276 – Applications

The choice between Incoloy 825 and Hastelloy C276 usually depends on the specific application and the corrosive environment involved. Incoloy 825 is often used in oil and gas production, chemical processing and power generation, where it is exposed to sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid and chloride-containing media. Its good weldability and formability also make it suitable for the manufacture of complex components and structures.

Hastelloy C276, on the other hand, is widely used in the chemical processing industry, especially when dealing with highly corrosive acids such as hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. It is also used in pulp and paper production, pollution control and waste treatment, where its excellent corrosion resistance and strength are crucial.
