Gnee Steel Monel 400 Description

Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy that is resistant to corrosion from seawater and high-temperature steam, as well as salt solutions and alkaline solutions.
Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy with excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of media. Monel 400 is characterized by good overall corrosion resistance, good weldability, and medium to high strength. This alloy has been used in a variety of applications. It exhibits excellent corrosion resistance to rapidly flowing brackish water or seawater. Under deoxygenated conditions, it has particularly strong resistance to hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids. The alloy is slightly magnetic at room temperature. Monel 400 is widely used in the chemical, petroleum, and marine industries.

Corrosion Resistance of Monel 400

Corrosion Resistance of Monel 400

Monel 400 alloy is virtually immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking in typical environments. Generally, it exhibits very good corrosion resistance in reducing environments but poorer resistance under oxidizing conditions. It is not suitable for oxidizing acids such as nitric and nitrous acids. However, it is resistant to most alkalis, salts, water, foodstuffs, organic substances, and atmospheric environments at both ambient and elevated temperatures.

This nickel alloy is susceptible to corrosion in sulfur-containing gases above approximately 700°F, and molten sulfur will also corrode the alloy at temperatures above approximately 500°F.

Monel 400 has roughly the same corrosion resistance as pure nickel, but due to its superior machinability, it offers higher maximum operating pressures and temperatures at a lower cost.
