Inconel 718 Description

Gnee Steel Inconel 718 Description
Inconel 600 (Nickel Alloy 600) is a standard engineering material suitable for applications requiring corrosion and high-temperature resistance. This alloy also possesses excellent mechanical properties, combining high strength with good workability.
The high nickel content enables Inconel 600 to resist corrosion from a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds and makes it virtually immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking. The chromium content ensures resistance to sulfide corrosion and provides oxidation resistance at high temperatures or in corrosive solutions. Inconel 600 cannot be strengthened by precipitation hardening; it can only be hardened and strengthened through cold working. The versatility of Inconel 600 makes it widely used in various fields, with a working temperature range from cryogenic temperatures to above 2000°F (1095°C).

Corrosion Resistance of Inconel 718
INCONEL 718 alloy exhibits excellent corrosion resistance to a variety of media.
This corrosion resistance is similar to that of other nickel-chromium alloys and is closely related to its composition.
Nickel helps improve the alloy's corrosion resistance to many inorganic and organic compounds (except strong oxidizing compounds) across a wide range of pH values. It also helps prevent stress corrosion cracking caused by chloride ions.
Chromium provides the alloy with resistance to oxidizing media and sulfide attack. Molybdenum helps improve the alloy's resistance to pitting corrosion in various media.

FAQ
Q: What is 718 Inconel?
A: Inconel 718 is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant nickel-based superalloy. It possesses excellent mechanical properties, high-temperature strength, and resistance to oxidation and corrosion. Inconel 718 is widely used in various industries, including aerospace, oil and gas, automotive, and power generation.
Q: Can Inconel 718 be welded?
A: Inconel 718 alloy exhibits excellent weldability in both age-hardened and annealed states. However, despite its strong resistance to strain-age cracking, some welding problems still exist, such as microcracks and solidification cracks.
Q: Does Inconel 718 work harden?
A: Due to its high toughness, low thermal conductivity, and susceptibility to work hardening, Inconel 718 is an extremely difficult material to machine. Furthermore, as a material prone to work hardening, Inconel 718 undergoes multiple plastic deformations during machining.
Q: At what temperature does Inconel 718 oxidize?
A: Inconel 718 begins to deform under its own weight at a temperature of approximately 1540 K. At 1560 K, deep grooves appear on the material's surface. At temperatures of 1173 K and below, Inconel 718 undergoes a brief oxidation process after approximately 24 hours of exposure to air.
