What is the difference between Alloy 800 and Incoloy 800?

The fundamental difference between Incoloy 800 and Alloy 800 lies in their composition. Incoloy 800 is an austenitic nickel-iron-chromium alloy, with titanium and aluminum added to stabilize its structure. Its chromium content is typically higher than that of Alloy 800, ranging from 19.0% to 23.0% by weight.

Incoloy 800, 800H, and 800HT are all nickel-iron-chromium alloys with good strength and excellent resistance to oxidation and carburization, especially at high temperatures. These nickel-based steel alloys are essentially the same, except that 800H has a higher carbon content and 800HT has up to 1.20% aluminum and titanium added. Incoloy 800 was the first of these alloys, later slightly modified to become Incoloy 800H. This modification aimed to control the carbon content (0.05-0.10%) and grain size to optimize its resistance to stress fracture. Incoloy 800HT further increases the titanium and aluminum content (0.85-1.20%) to ensure optimal high-temperature performance. This nickel-based alloy is dual-certified (800H/HT), combining the characteristics of both alloys. The Incoloy 800H/HT alloy is specifically designed for high-temperature structural applications. The nickel content gives these alloys extremely high resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and σ-phase precipitation embrittlement. Their overall corrosion resistance is excellent. In the solution-annealed state, 800H and 800HT alloys exhibit superior creep and stress fracture properties. Currently, most suppliers, including Mega Mex, only offer dual-certified 800H/HT alloys.

 

Incoloy 800 is primarily used for applications with temperatures not exceeding 1100°F, while 800H and 800HT alloys are typically used for applications with temperatures above 1100°F, where excellent creep and fracture resistance is required. Their balanced chemical composition gives these nickel-based steel alloys excellent resistance to carburizing, oxidation, and nitriding. Even with prolonged use in the high-temperature range of 1200–1600°F, Incoloy 800HT does not become embrittled, unlike many stainless steels which do at this temperature. Nickel-chromium alloys typically possess excellent cold-forming properties, and 800HT is one such example. After prolonged cold forming, the grain size develops a visible wavy surface, known as "orange peel." Incoloy 800HT can be welded using methods commonly used for stainless steel.
