ASTM B165 UNS N04400 for chemical industry pipes
ASTM B165 UNS N04400 pipe, also known as Monel 400 pipe, is a nickel-copper alloy ideal for the chemical industry due to its excellent resistance to a variety of corrosive environments, including seawater, sulfuric acid, and hydrofluoric acid. It offers good strength and toughness in both subzero and high-temperature ranges (up to approximately 538°C or 1000°F), making it easy to weld and low-maintenance. This specification covers cold-finished seamless pipe in the annealed or stress-relieved condition for use in the chemical processing, offshore, and oil and gas industries.

What is the ASTM standard for Monel 400?
Monel 400 has multiple ASTM standards depending on the product form, such as ASTM B127 for plate, sheet, and strip, ASTM B163 and B165 for seamless and welded pipe, and ASTM B164 for bar. Other standards include ASTM B564 for flanges and AMS (Aerospace Material Specification) for specific applications, such as AMS 4574.

Key Features and Benefits
Corrosion Resistance: Monel 400 alloy is highly resistant to seawater, brine, various acids (sulfuric, hydrofluoric, and hydrochloric), and a variety of saline solutions.
Temperature Stability: It maintains its strength and corrosion resistance in both extremely cold and high-temperature conditions (up to 538°C/1000°F).
Mechanical Properties: The alloy exhibits good strength and toughness even at cryogenic temperatures.
Weldability: It can be processed using conventional welding, brazing, and soldering methods.
Low Maintenance: Its durability and resistance to extreme conditions make it a cost-effective, low-maintenance piping material.
Chemical Industry Applications
Chemical Processing: Widely used in chemical plants handling corrosive acids and alkalis.
Petrochemical Industry: Suitable for high-end industrial applications such as petrochemicals.
Marine Environments: Its excellent resistance to salt water and steam makes it an ideal choice for marine applications.
Manufacture and Conditions
Seamless Pipe: ASTM B165 specifically covers cold-worked seamless pipe. Annealed or Stress Relieved: Pipe is supplied in the annealed (soft, matte finish) or stress relieved condition.
Hardening: Monel 400 is a solid solution alloy that can only be hardened by cold working.
