What is the difference between Hastelloy C4 and C276?

Hastelloy C4 has a lower carbon content and relatively simple manufacturing requirements, so it is generally less expensive than Hastelloy C276. C276 contains more molybdenum and iron to increase its resistance to harsh environments and is generally more expensive than C4 because it is more complex to manufacture.

What is Hastelloy C4?

Hastelloy C-4 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with excellent high temperature stability. It has high ductility and corrosion resistance. Its high temperature resistance up to 1900 °F (1038 °C) makes it suitable for most chemical process applications in the welded state.

What is the difference between C4 and C22?

The chemical composition of Hastelloy C4 is 65% nickel, 16% chromium, 16% molybdenum and 2% iron. Whereas the chemical composition of Hastelloy C22 is 56% nickel, 22% chromium, 13% molybdenum and 3% tungsten, with small amounts of iron, cobalt and manganese.

Which is better, 400 alloy or C-276 alloy?

Monel 400 alloy relies primarily on the addition of copper to its composition, while Hastelloy C276 adds molybdenum, chromium, and tungsten, which provide greater solid solution strengthening, thereby improving tensile strength.

Chemical Composition of Hastelloy C4 vs C276

According to the table below, Hastelloy C4 has a lower iron content and is more suitable for applications that require thermal stability and resistance to intergranular corrosion. In contrast, Hastelloy C276 has higher molybdenum and tungsten contents, which enhance its resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and other extreme corrosive environments, making it more suitable for use in more severe conditions.
