Gnee Steel Hastelloy C-276

C-276 alloy is a solid-solution strengthened nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy containing a small amount of tungsten. C-276 alloy exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of harsh environments and media. Like many other nickel alloys, it has good ductility and is easy to form and weld. This alloy is widely used in most industrial sectors where corrosive chemical environments exist and other alloys are unsuitable.

Hastelloy C-276 is a versatile, corrosion-resistant nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy. Hastelloy C-276 material is resistant to grain boundary precipitation, making it suitable for most chemical process applications under welding conditions. Another advantage of this alloy is its excellent resistance to pitting corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and oxidizing atmospheres.

The alloy retains high strength at extremely high temperatures. Typical applications include equipment components in chemical and petrochemical organic chlorine processes, pulp and paper digesters and bleaching areas, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers, and pharmaceutical and food processing equipment.

Properties of Hastelloy C-276

 

Heat-Treatment

Forged components of Hastelloy C-276 are supplied in the solution heat-treated condition. C-276 alloy is typically solution heat-treated at 2050°F and rapidly quenched. If possible, hot-formed parts should be solution heat-treated before final machining or installation.

 

Corrosion Resistance
Hastelloy C-276's composition is optimized to provide excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of chemical process environments. This alloy is resistant to corrosion from high-temperature contaminated mineral acids, organic and inorganic chloride-contaminated media, hypochlorites, chlorine dioxide solutions, formic and acetic acids, acetic anhydride, seawater, and brine solutions.

 

Processing Performance
Hastelloy C-276 can be forged, hot upset, and impact extruded. Although the alloy is prone to work hardening, it can still be successfully deep drawn, spun, press formed, or stamped. All common welding methods can be used to weld C-276 alloy, but oxyacetylene welding and submerged arc welding are not recommended if the finished product is to be used in corrosive environments. Special measures should be taken to avoid excessive heat input.

 

Welding
Tungsten inert gas welding (TIG), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), shielded metal arc welding (coated electrodes), or resistance welding can be used. Minimum heat input, while ensuring sufficient penetration, reduces the risk of hot cracking. Oxyacetylene welding should be avoided due to the possibility of carburization. Hastelloy C-276 can be used in the as-welded condition in most chemical and petrochemical process equipment.

Hastelloy C-276 is widely used in the chemical and petrochemical industries, for example, in systems involving chlorinated organic compounds and catalysts, and is particularly suitable for high-temperature, inorganic and organic acid environments (such as formic and acetic acid containing impurities), and seawater corrosion environments.
It is mainly used in the following equipment or components:
1. Paper industry, such as digesters and bleaching vessels.
2. Scrubbing towers, heaters, and wet steam fans in flue gas desulfurization systems.
3. Equipment and components in acidic gas environments.
4. Acetic acid and acid reactors; 5. Sulfuric acid condensers.
6. Production of diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI).
7. Production and processing of impure phosphoric acid.
