The use of superduplex stainless steels extends to some of the most demanding applications across multiple industries. Super duplex steel pipes have substantial additions of chromium, molybdenum and nickel, which provide superior corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. The addition of nitrogen to the alloy increases the stability of austenite in the superduplex 2507 tube microstructure. The microstructure also contains a mixture of austenite and ferrite in almost equal proportions of approximately 50%. Superior protection against chloride pitting and resistance to crevice corrosion is why many Super Duplex suppliers recommend these components for use in industries such as flue gas scrubbing, offshore oil production/technology, pulp and paper mills, and oil and gas industry.
Although Super Duplex 2507 seamless pipes have many good properties, they face limitations when used at high temperatures. Special emphasis is placed on Super Duplex 2507 pipe manufactured to ASTM A789 specifications because their use at temperatures in excess of 600° F may have deleterious effects. First, there is a loss of toughness and corrosion resistance. Second, ASTM A789 UNS S32760 pipe can easily become brittle when exposed to temperatures in excess of 600° F for extended periods of time. Typically, ASTM A789 UNS S32750 is subjected to thermal and product analysis as well as mechanical testing to check its compliance with specifications. According to this specification, each superduplex welded pipe supplied in the heat-treated condition must comply with specified temperature and quenching conditions.
