UNS N04400 pipe has a melting point of up to 1350 degrees Celsius, so it can be used in high temperature applications. Specifications for this grade of nickel copper alloy are ASTM B165 and B725. Seamless, welded, ERW and fabricated pipes and tubes are available. ASME SB165 Monel 400 seamless pipe meets ASTM, ASME and API standards and is available in nominal ID sizes ranging from 15 inches to 150 inches.
MONEL Nickel-Copper Alloy R-405 (UNS N04405) is an easy-to-machine grade of Alloy 400. Its higher sulfur content improves machinability. It has essentially the same corrosion resistance and physical properties as Alloy 400, but with a slightly different range of mechanical properties. Alloy R-405 is primarily used for automatic screw machine stock and is generally not recommended for other applications.
The fabrication, pickling, and heat treatment procedures for MONEL Alloy R-405 are the same as for Alloy 400. This alloy is not recommended for forging.
MONEL Alloy R-405 was developed for good machinability and is recommended for use in automatic screw machines. The sulfur in its composition produces nickel-copper sulfides that act as chip breakers. Due to these inclusions, the surface finish of this alloy is not as smooth as that of MONEL Alloy 400.
