What is U channel steel used for? Steel channel is often used in conjunction with I-beams and other steel products to build commercial and industrial buildings, such as warehouses. It can act as girts, studs, braces, joists or other structural components where the added strength of an I-beam is not necessary. What is the difference between C channel and U channel? Steel channel has been classified into "C" and "U" types depending on its outlook. Hence there are two standards to show the channel dimensions - UPE & UPN. UPE is for the C channel steel with parallel flanges while UPN for the U channel steel with tapered flanges.
