Tungsten is a gray-white shiny metal; it is solid at room temperature. It has the highest melting point, the lowest vapor pressure above 1650°C, the highest strength and the highest hardness among all pure metals and alloys. In 1783, two Spanish brothers (de Elhujar) isolated pure tungsten metal for the first time. The word "tungsten" is derived from the Swedish "tung sten" which means "heavy stone". The chemical symbol "W" for tungsten comes from the element's other name, "tungsten," which is derived from wolframite, the mineral in which the element is found.
