UNS N02200 (Nickel 200) and UNS N02201 (Nickel 201) are both commercially pure nickel tubing used in cooling systems in power plants, offering excellent corrosion resistance and high thermal conductivity. The primary difference lies in the carbon content, which makes Nickel 201 the best choice for high-temperature applications.

What is the difference between Nickel 200 and Nickel 201?

Nickel 200 is a commercially pure wrought material with good mechanical properties. In contrast, Nickel 201 has a lower carbon content, resulting in better formability. Nickel 233 is also a commercially pure wrought nickel with excellent corrosion resistance, but the residual elements are strictly controlled.

Nickel 200 and Nickel 201

UNS N02200 (Nickel 200) Pipe
UNS N02200 is an industrially pure wrought nickel alloy (99.6% nickel content) known for its strong corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties.

Features:
Excellent corrosion resistance to distilled, natural, and flowing seawater.
Strong resistance to neutral and alkaline saline solutions.
Good thermal and electrical conductivity.
High ductility and good mechanical strength.

Power Plant Use Limitations:
Susceptible to corrosion in still or low-velocity seawater.
Use is generally limited to temperatures below 600°F (315°C).
Prolonged exposure to temperatures above 600°F (315°C) can cause graphitization, which severely impairs the material's properties.

UNS N02201 (Nickel 201) Pipe
UNS N02201 is a low-carbon version of Nickel 200, making it more resistant to damage from high temperatures. Features:
Low Carbon Content: Carbon content is limited to 0.02% (compared to a maximum of 0.15% for N02200), preventing graphitization and embrittlement at high temperatures.
High-Temperature Performance: Approved for use in pressure vessels up to 1250°F (677°C). This is a significant advantage over Nickel 200 for high-temperature systems.
Excellent Weldability: The lower carbon content reduces the risk of weld-induced intergranular corrosion, making it a better choice for welding applications.
Good Corrosion Resistance: Excellent corrosion resistance to alkaline bases and resistant to distilled and natural water.

Dual-Certified Nickel 200/201:
Many manufacturers produce dual-certified Nickel 200/201, combining the elemental limitations of both grades into a single alloy. This product offers customers superior performance by combining the strength of Nickel 200 with the compositional stability and high-temperature resistance of Nickel 201.

Power Plant Cooling System Applications
For power plant cooling systems, the choice between UNS N02200 and UNS N02201 depends on the system's operating temperature:
For systems operating below 600°F (315°C), UNS N02200 pipe offers excellent corrosion resistance and is suitable for conveying natural or distilled water.
For systems operating above 600°F (315°C), UNS N02201 is essential to avoid graphitization and embrittlement. Its excellent high-temperature performance makes it particularly suitable for components such as heat exchangers.
In seawater environments, both alloys perform well under high-velocity flow conditions. However, the potential for localized corrosion in low-velocity or stagnant seawater should be considered.
For high-purity systems in power plants, such as those used for water purification, the high purity and corrosion resistance of both alloys make them well-suited for the application.

About Gnee Steel

Gnee Steel specializes in the production of various nickel-based alloys. Gnee Steel's product packaging includes steel strapping: Pipes with an outer diameter of 3 inches or less are typically strapped together with polypropylene film to prevent rust during sea transportation, and then secured with steel strapping. Wooden boxes/crates: Pipes are typically packaged in wooden boxes or crates to protect them during transportation, especially those that are longer or have larger diameters. Seaworthy export packaging: Suppliers typically use standard seaworthy export packaging methods, which may include a variety of materials and techniques to protect the pipes during transportation. Tarpaulin packaging: This prevents rain, seawater, and other external factors from penetrating the export wooden crates during transportation. Gnee Steel specializes in the production and sale of alloy materials. Gnee Steel's products are widely used in aerospace, chemical, power, automotive, and nuclear energy industries, and we can provide customized alloy material solutions based on customer needs.
