Inconel 718 Round Bar Application

Inconel 718 round bars are used in a wide range of high-performance applications due to their superior strength, corrosion resistance, and high temperature resistance. They are commonly used in aerospace components, gas turbines, oil and gas equipment, and cryogenic applications.

What is the composition of INCONEL 718 Round Bar?

Inconel 718 Round Bar is a nickel-chromium alloy bar that contains up to 55% nickel. It also contains 17% chromium, 4.9% niobium, at least 6.6% iron, as well as aluminum, boron, carbon, cobalt, copper, manganese, phosphorus, lead, sulfur and silicon.

Applications of Inconel 718 Round Bars

The dramatic growth in air travel has led to an increased demand for more powerful and efficient turbines, which require higher operating temperatures. Applications for 718 alloy in turbines include the more critical rotating components (shafts, plates, blades, and disks). However, it is also used in airfoils, support structures, and pressure vessels among other uses in modern aircraft.

Less common applications are tanks, vessels, rings, and pressure vessels in rocket engines, which utilize the same temperature stability, albeit at temperatures as low as 250 degrees Celsius.

Aside from aerospace, the largest single market for 718 alloy is in various oil and gas applications. While high temperature performance is not critical, this alloy has high strength and excellent corrosion resistance in seawater. Due to its popularity in aerospace applications in the 1960s and 1970s, its product forms and sizes are relatively wide. As a result, its immediate target applications include fasteners, valve gates, valve seats, valve stems, and valve trim.

As oil and gas well environments become increasingly harsh, production equipment has experienced stress corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement failures. 718 alloy has outperformed most alloys previously used, such as K-500 alloy. However, its composition can be modified to improve its performance in specific applications. As a result, 718 alloy is now available in a variety of different specifications, including AMS5662/AMS5663 for common aerospace applications, and API 6A CRA, which is most commonly used in oil and gas related applications. In addition, the alloy can be supplied in a variety of different conditions, for example, the degree of heat treatment process (aging) can produce a variety of different strength grades.
