What's the difference between Inconel 601 and 602?

What's the difference between Inconel 601 and 602?
Compared to Inconel 601, Inconel 602 offers superior oxidation resistance, creep strength, and reduction resistance. While Inconel 601 is a high-strength, cost-effective material with high tensile strength and excellent oxidation resistance, Inconel 602 is specifically designed for more corrosive, high-temperature applications. Inconel 602 achieves its enhanced properties through a higher chromium content and the addition of microalloying elements such as aluminum, yttrium, and zirconium.
What is Inconel 601?
Inconel 601 is a nickel-chromium alloy with extremely strong oxidation resistance, capable of withstanding temperatures up to 2200°F (1200°C). A tightly adhering oxide layer forms on the surface of the 601 alloy, preventing peeling even under harsh thermal cycling conditions. This alloy exhibits good high-temperature strength and maintains good ductility even after prolonged use.

Differences between Inconel 601 and 602
Corrosion Resistance: One of the most important considerations when choosing an Inconel alloy is its corrosion resistance. Inconel 601 is renowned for its excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of environments, including acidic ones. Due to its aluminum content, it is well-suited for sulfur-rich environments. On the other hand, Inconel 602 has poorer corrosion resistance compared to 601.
Heat Treatment: A fundamental characteristic of any high-temperature alloy is its ability to withstand thermal cycling. Inconel 601 has excellent heat treatment properties and can withstand temperatures up to 1150°C. It can also be easily welded using conventional methods, making it a common choice for manufacturing parts in high-temperature environments. Inconel 602, on the other hand, has limited heat treatment properties and is not recommended for high-temperature applications.
Mechanical Properties: Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation are factors that must be considered when selecting any metal. Inconel 601 stands out for its superior mechanical properties, including a tensile strength of up to 870 MPa at room temperature and an elongation of 45%. In contrast, Inconel 602's mechanical properties are slightly inferior to 601, making it less suitable for high-stress applications.
Applications
While Inconel 601 has a wider range of applications, it remains the preferred choice in certain industries. For example, due to its higher nickel content, Inconel 602 is often used in specific applications requiring extremely high corrosion resistance, erosion resistance, and high-temperature strength. However, due to its limited heat-treatable capabilities, its use in high-temperature environments is not recommended.
