Whats the difference between Inconel 600 and stainless steel 316

What's the difference between Inconel 600 and stainless steel 316?

Inconel 600 is a nickel-chromium alloy, ideal for high-temperature applications due to its superior strength and corrosion resistance (especially its resistance to stress corrosion cracking at high temperatures). Stainless steel 316 is an iron-based alloy, offering better value and excellent resistance to general corrosion and pitting (especially in chloride-containing environments), but its high-temperature strength is lower than that of Inconel 600. The choice between the two depends on the specific operating temperature, required strength, and corrosion resistance of the application.

Can Inconel 600 alloy be welded?

Inconel 600 alloy can be welded using various methods, such as tungsten inert gas welding (GTAW) or argon arc welding (TIG). Other methods include gas metal arc welding (GMAW), gas metal arc welding (MIG), and plasma arc welding (PAW).

Inconel 600 vs. Stainless Steel 316 – Mechanical Properties

Both alloys exhibit high strength and good ductility in terms of mechanical properties. However, Inconel 600 tends to have superior creep resistance and tensile strength at high temperatures, making it the preferred material for applications requiring prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Conversely, while Stainless Steel 316 also offers good strength and ductility, its mechanical properties may not remain as excellent as Inconel 600 under these conditions.

Inconel 600 vs. Stainless Steel 316 – Welding Characteristics

Furthermore, the weldability of these two alloys differs. Inconel 600 is relatively easy to weld and can be joined using various welding methods. However, special care must be taken to avoid cracking and other weld defects. On the other hand, Stainless Steel 316 can also be welded using standard welding techniques, but it is less prone to weld-related problems.
