Comparison of solution aging of GH3030 and Nimonic 80A round bars

In high-temperature engineering, choosing the wrong strengthening mechanism is a major cause of component failure. Are you designing complex welded structures or high-load bars? The choice between GH3030 and Nimonic 80A (W.Nr. 2.4952) is not just about the brand, but also about the physical properties of the metals resisting stress at 700°C to 800°C.

Your biggest challenges are stress fracture and creep: "Why did my Nimonic 80A bar break during installation? Or why does my GH3030 bar tensile under load?" As a trusted Chinese manufacturer, Gnee Steel provides high-quality VIM+ESR refined bars and the technical data sheets you need to help you make an informed choice.

Comparison of solution aging of GH3030 and Nimonic 80A round bars

GH3030 round bars and Nimonic 80A bars are both nickel-based superalloys commonly used in high-temperature environments, but they differ significantly in terms of strengthening mechanisms, heat treatment strategies, and performance characteristics.

What are the specific specifications of NIMONIC 80A?

NIMONIC Alloy 80A (UNS N07080/W. Nr. 2.4952 and 2.4631) is a forged, age-hardening nickel-chromium alloy strengthened by the addition of titanium, aluminum, and carbon, suitable for temperature environments up to 815°C (1500°F). It is produced using high-frequency melting and air casting processes for extrusion molding.

GH3030 round bars and Nimonic 80A bars are both nickel-based superalloys commonly used in high-temperature environments, but they differ significantly in terms of strengthening mechanisms, heat treatment strategies, and performance characteristics.

GH3030 alloy bar (nickel-chromium solid solution strengthened): Focuses on solid solution strengthening to form a single-phase austenitic structure. Its heat treatment focuses on stabilizing this structure to obtain maximum thermal strength and corrosion resistance, rather than peak age hardening.

Nimonic 80A bar (nickel-chromium precipitation strengthened): Employs precipitation strengthening, primarily through the addition of titanium and aluminum to form a dense and uniform Ni3(Al, Ti) phase dispersion layer, thereby achieving high strength and creep resistance.

3.Comparison of Advantages and Key Applications of GH3030 Alloy Rods and Nimonic 80A Rods

GH3030: Solid Solution Strengthened Alloy

GH3030 is a nickel-chromium alloy whose strengthening primarily relies on lattice distortion caused by chromium atoms in the nickel matrix.

Strengthening Method: Simple solid solution (Ni-Cr).

Advantages: Maintains metallurgical stability throughout its service life. Excellent plasticity and extremely high resistance to weld cracking due to the absence of secondary "age-hardening" phases.

Optimal Applications: Welding aerospace components, combustion chamber linings, and furnace inner tubes.

Nimonic 80A: Age-Hardening Alloy

Nimonic 80A is a high-temperature alloy that achieves precipitation hardening through the addition of titanium (Ti) and aluminum (Al).

Strengthening Method: Through age-hardening of the γ′[Ni3(Al, Ti)] phase.

Advantages: Through rigorous heat treatment (solution + aging), millions of tiny particles "pin" dislocations, providing strong resistance to creep (tensile).

Best applications: high-temperature bolts, fasteners, exhaust valves, and critical turbine spindles.

FAQ

Q1: Why is GH3030 considered more "stable" for welded structures?
A: Because GH3030 lacks the Titanium/Aluminum levels found in Nimonic 80A, it does not undergo "strain-age cracking" (SAC) during the welding cooling cycle or subsequent heat treatment. This makes it a much safer Material Selection for complex welded furnace components.

Q2: Can I use GH3030 for high-stress furnace bolts at 750°C?
A: We do not recommend it. At 750°C, a GH3030 bolt will slowly "creep" or stretch under constant tension, eventually leading to a loose joint. Nimonic 80A is the correct Premium Quality choice for load-bearing fasteners due to its precipitation-hardened matrix.

Q3: What is the benefit of your VIM+ESR process for these bars?
A: Purity is essential for consistent aging. Our VIM+ESR refining ensures that Ti and Al are uniformly distributed. In Nimonic 80A, this prevents "soft spots" in the bar; in GH3030, it ensures maximum ductility for complex forging.

Q4: Do you support custom diameters for R&D projects?
A: Yes. We produce bars from 10mm to 300mm. As a Trusted China Manufacturer, we can handle custom rolling or forging runs for specialized aerospace MRO and R&D requirements.
