inconel Alloy 625 VS inconel Alloy 601

Inconel 601 exhibits excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance and good strength, making it an ideal material for furnace components; while Inconel 625 possesses superior overall corrosion resistance (including resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion), higher strength at extreme temperatures, and is immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking due to its molybdenum and niobium content, making it more suitable for marine, aerospace, and chemical industries. If only high-temperature resistance/oxidation resistance is required, choose 601; but if both strength and corrosion resistance are needed in corrosive chemical/marine environments, choose 625.

Does Inconel 625 undergo work hardening?

Machining Inconel 625 is an extremely challenging task because this material has poor thermal conductivity, is prone to work hardening, and maintains its strength even at high temperatures. Due to its excellent corrosion and heat resistance, this superalloy is widely used in the aerospace and oil and gas industries.

Inconel 625 alloy bar

Alloy 625 | N06625 | W.Nr. 2.4856 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy. It is known for its high strength and broad corrosion resistance. This alloy performs exceptionally well in a variety of corrosive media.

Alloy 601 (UNS N06601, EN 2.4851) is a nickel-chromium alloy characterized by the addition of aluminum. This gives it excellent corrosion resistance and performance in high-temperature oxidizing and carburizing environments.

Alloy 625 vs Alloy 601: Key Differentiators

Main Advantages

Alloy 625 offers broad corrosion resistance and high strength. Alloy 601 is primarily used in high-temperature oxidizing environments and exhibits good resistance to carburization.

Key Alloying Elements

Alloy 625 contains high levels of molybdenum and niobium, which enhances its corrosion resistance. Alloy 601 contains aluminum and a small amount of molybdenum, which enhances its oxidation resistance.

Temperature limit

Both materials can withstand high temperatures. For continuous oxidizing environments up to 1200 °C (2200 °F), alloy 601 is generally preferred.

Corrosion Properties

Alloy 625 is more corrosion-resistant than other alloys and can withstand acids and chlorides. Alloy 601 performs well in dry, hot oxidizing environments, but its resistance to wet corrosion is poor.

Strength

Alloy 625 typically exhibits high strength at both room and elevated temperatures, while the performance of alloy 601 is more dependent on the protective effect of its oxide layer.
