Inconel 718 and Inconel X-750: A Comprehensive Comparison

Inconel 718 possesses exceptional strength (especially at high temperatures) and superior overall corrosion resistance, thanks to its higher chromium content and added molybdenum, making it an ideal material for the aerospace industry; Inconel X-750 exhibits excellent thermal fatigue and stress corrosion resistance and is commonly used in power generation and chemical processing industries. It has higher elongation than 718 but lower strength. Both are precipitation-hardened nickel-based superalloys, but the composition of alloy 718 (higher chromium, molybdenum, and niobium content) gives it higher tensile and yield strength, while X-750 offers superior fatigue and creep performance in specific harsh environments.

Is Inconel X-750 magnetic?

This material possesses excellent creep resistance and is non-magnetic. It retains enhanced strength properties at high temperatures up to 1300°F (700°C) and exhibits good oxidation resistance at temperatures up to 1800°F (983°C). Inconel X-750 is resistant to a variety of industrial corrosive media under both oxidizing and reducing conditions.

What Is Inconel 718?

Inconel 718 is a nickel-based superalloy known for its high strength, corrosion resistance, and excellent weldability. It can be strengthened through precipitation hardening, meaning its mechanical properties can be improved through heat treatment.

Temperature Range: Performs well in a temperature range of -250°C to 700°C.
Corrosion Resistance: Exhibits excellent resistance to oxidation, pitting corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, even in harsh environments.
Mechanical Strength: Possesses high tensile strength and yield strength due to the presence of niobium.
Applications: Commonly used in aerospace turbines, gas turbines, nuclear reactors, and the oil and gas extraction industry.

What Is Inconel X-750?

Inconel X-750 is another nickel-based alloy that performs exceptionally well in high-temperature environments. It is also a precipitation-hardening alloy, but contains more aluminum and titanium than Inconel 718, resulting in higher strength at elevated temperatures.

Temperature range: Performs best at temperatures up to 980°C.
Creep resistance: Exhibits excellent resistance to deformation under prolonged high-temperature stress.
Corrosion resistance: Has good resistance to oxidation and chemical corrosion, but slightly less than Inconel 718.
Applications: Commonly used in jet engines, nuclear reactors, springs, and fasteners.
