ASTM B163 Monel 400 seamless tubing is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant nickel-copper alloy suitable for high-precision applications such as heat exchangers, condensers, and marine environments. Key features include excellent resistance to seawater, corrosive solutions, various acids, and high temperatures, along with good mechanical properties from sub-zero to 538°C (1000°F). These tubings are typically manufactured in smaller sizes with thinner walls and are hardened by cold working.

Is Monel 400 alloy magnetic?

Monel 400 alloy is not always non-magnetic, as its room temperature magnetism depends on its chemical composition and thermal history, with a Curie temperature close to the ambient temperature range. While Monel 400 alloy is widely used for its corrosion resistance, it is slightly magnetic at room temperature but loses its magnetism at higher temperatures.
ASTM B163 MONEL 400 Pipe Overview
Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy with excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of substances. Monel 400 is characterized by excellent general corrosion resistance, excellent ductility, and considerable toughness. This alloy has been widely used in a variety of applications. It exhibits good resistance to fast-moving micro-water or surface water. It is particularly resistant to degassed sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. The alloy is slightly magnetic at room temperature. Monel 400 is widely used in organic chemistry, crude oil, and deep-sea industrial production.
Monel 400 alloy pipe exhibits better corrosion resistance than commercially pure nickel (UNS N02200) under reducing conditions and better corrosion resistance than refined copper alloys under oxidizing conditions. However, Monel 400 alloy pipe is not suitable for use with strong oxidizing acids, such as nitric acid or nitrites. In such environments, high-chromium stainless steels such as UNS S44627 or 310 (UNS S31000) should be considered.
Characteristics of Monel 400 Pipe
Monel 400 pipe is a corrosion-resistant alloy with excellent overall properties and wide applications. This alloy offers excellent corrosion resistance in hydrochloric acid and fluorine gas, as well as in hot concentrated caustic soda solutions. It is also resistant to corrosion from neutral solutions, water, seawater, air, and organic matter. A key characteristic of this alloy is its general resistance to intergranular corrosion cracking and excellent workability.

Gnee Steel specializes in the production of various nickel-based alloys. Gnee Steel's product packaging includes steel strapping: Pipes with an outer diameter of 3 inches or less are typically strapped together with polypropylene film to prevent rust during sea transportation, and then secured with steel strapping. Wooden boxes/crates: Pipes are typically packaged in wooden boxes or crates to protect them during transportation, especially those that are longer or have larger diameters. Seaworthy export packaging: Suppliers typically use standard seaworthy export packaging methods, which may include a variety of materials and techniques to protect the pipes during transportation. Tarpaulin packaging: This prevents rain, seawater, and other external factors from penetrating the export wooden crates during transportation. Gnee Steel specializes in the production and sale of alloy materials. Gnee Steel's products are widely used in aerospace, chemical, power, automotive, and nuclear energy industries, and we can provide customized alloy material solutions based on customer needs.
