Inconel 718 alloy

Aging treatment process of Inconel 718 alloy
The primary aging treatment for Inconel 718 consists of two stages designed to increase its strength and hardness. This typically involves solution treatment and precipitation hardening. Solution treatment involves heating the alloy to a high temperature (e.g., 900°C - 1010°C), holding it for a specified period, and then rapidly cooling it. This is followed by an aging treatment, where the alloy is heated to a lower temperature (e.g., 720°C - 760°C) and held for a specified period to precipitate strengthening phases such as γ′ and γ binuclear (γ″).
What is the aging treatment for Inconel 718?
Inconel 718 alloy is typically heat treated in two ways: solution annealing at 1700-1850°F, followed by rapid cooling (usually in water), precipitation hardening at 1325°F for 8 hours, furnace cooling to 1150°F, holding at 1150°F for 18 hours, and finally air cooling.

1. Solution Treatment:
Purpose: To dissolve strengthening precipitates and form a uniform microstructure.
Process: The alloy is heated to a temperature range of 900°C to 1010°C (1652°F to 1850°F).
Duration: Typically held for 1 to 2 hours.
Cooling: Rapid cooling, typically water quenching, is performed to prevent premature precipitation of strengthening phases during cooling. 2. Precipitation Hardening (Aging):
Purpose: To precipitate strengthening phases (γ′ and γ″), significantly increasing the alloy's strength and hardness.
First Stage (720°C - 760°C): Heating to a temperature range of 720°C to 760°C (1328°F to 1400°F).
Duration: Hold at temperature for 8 hours.
Cooling: Controlled cooling (e.g., furnace cooling at a controlled rate of 55°C/h to 620°C).
Second Stage (620°C): Cooling to 620°C (1148°F).
Duration: Hold at temperature for 8 hours.
Cooling: Air cool to room temperature.
