The name zirconium comes from the mineral zircon. There are vast resources in Australia, the United States and Brazil. Zirconium is a silvery, shiny ductile metal with good deformation capabilities, especially during rolling and forging processes. Zirconium has excellent corrosion resistance due to the formation of a stable oxide layer. Zirconium usually contains a few percent of the similar element hafnium. The production of hafnium-free zirconium is complex but necessary for nuclear technology applications.
The alloy also exhibits good resistance to general corrosion, including acids, alkalis and salt water. It is known for its excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, which is critical to maintaining the integrity of nuclear fuel cladding.
The main application of Zircloy 2 is in the nuclear power industry, where it is widely used as a cladding material for fuel rods in pressurized water reactors (PWR) and boiling water reactors (BWR). It provides a protective barrier around nuclear fuel, preventing the release of radioactive materials and ensuring reactor safety and efficiency.
