Cold rolling: hot-rolled steel coils are used as raw materials, and the oxide scale is removed by pickling and then cold-rolled continuously. The finished product is a hard-rolled coil. Due to the cold work hardening caused by continuous cold deformation, the strength, hardness, and toughness of the hard-rolled coils increase. The plastic index will decrease, so the stamping performance will deteriorate and it can only be used for parts with simple deformation. Hard rolled coils can be used as raw materials in hot-dip galvanizing plants because hot-dip galvanizing units are equipped with annealing lines. The weight of hard-rolled coils is generally 6 to 13.5 tons. The steel coils are continuously rolled on hot-rolled pickled coils at room temperature. The inner diameter is 610mm.

In October 1972, Nippon Steel built the №1 continuous annealing unit at Junjin Plant, and first developed the technology of continuous annealing to produce cold-rolled deep-drawn carbon steel sheets, referred to as NSC-CAPL.
In July 1976, Nippon Steel Pipe built the №2 continuous annealing unit at the Fushan plant. This is another continuous annealing technology developed after Nippon Steel to produce cold-rolled deep-drawn carbon steel sheets, referred to as NKK-CAL. In July 1980, Kawasaki Steel also developed and built the №2 continuous annealing unit, referred to as KM-CAL, at the Chiba Plant.
In the 1980s, major steel plants in the world successively built continuous annealing units. By the end of the 1980s, a total of 34 units had been built. Further development occurred in the 1990s. By the end of 1996, approximately 54 sets of continuous annealing units had been built around the world, with a total processing capacity of more than 33 million t/a. Among them, there are 26 sets of NSC-CAPL type, 15 sets of NKK-CAL type, and 13 sets of KM-CAL type.
