What is Alloy 600? A detailed explanation of its applications, ingredients, and performance

Alloy 600 (or Inconel 600, UNS N06600) is a non-magnetic, high-performance nickel-chromium-iron alloy renowned for its excellent heat and corrosion resistance over a wide temperature range from low temperatures to above 1093°C (2000°F). It cannot be hardened by heat treatment but can be strengthened by cold working.

What is the chemical composition of Alloy 600?

The main chemical components of Alloy 600 are nickel (minimum 72%), chromium (14-17%), and iron (6-10%). In addition, it contains up to 1% manganese, 0.50% silicon, 0.50% copper, 0.15% carbon, and 0.015% sulfur. The combination of nickel, chromium, and iron gives this alloy excellent resistance to high-temperature oxidation and corrosion.

What is Alloy 600 made of?

Alloy 600 is a solid solution strengthened alloy, primarily composed of nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), and iron (Fe). Its elemental balance gives it excellent resistance to oxidation, carburization, and high-temperature corrosion.

Typical chemical composition:

Nickel (Ni): Approximately 72% – Provides excellent heat and corrosion resistance

Chromium (Cr): 14–17% – Enhances oxidation and scale resistance

Iron (Fe): 6–10% – Enhances structural strength

Others: Minor amounts of manganese, copper, silicon, and carbon

These elements work together to give Alloy 600 its superior corrosion resistance, including:

Chloride stress corrosion cracking

Oxidation at high temperatures

Carburizing and nitriding atmospheres

Sulfur-containing gases (under non-high temperature conditions)

Inconel 600 Application Areas

Inconel 600 Application Areas

Chemical Processing: Heaters, evaporator tubes, bubble towers, and equipment used for processing fatty acids and producing caustic sodas.

Aerospace: Jet engine and fuselage components, including exhaust liners, turbine seals, and afterburner components.

Aerospace

Nuclear Power: Due to its resistance to high-purity water corrosion, it can be used in steam generator tubes, reactor pressure vessels, and control rod components.

Heat Treatment: Used in furnaces, distillation kettles, baskets, and other heat treatment equipment requiring strength and oxidation resistance at high temperatures.

Marine and Offshore: Due to its resistance to chloride corrosion, it can be used in heat exchangers and process equipment in marine environments.
