The difference between annealed AISI 201L and annealed nickel 600

The difference between annealed AISI 201L and annealed nickel 600
AISI 201L is a manganese-rich stainless steel (iron-based) with cost-effective corrosion resistance; while annealed nickel 600 is a high-nickel alloy (nickel-based) with excellent performance in harsh oxidation/reduction environments, high temperatures, and stress corrosion cracking conditions. The main differences between the two lie in their basic elements, strength (201L has higher strength after rolling, while 600 performs better after heat treatment), corrosion resistance (Ni 600 performs far better than 201L), and cost.
What is Nickel 600?
Nickel 600 alloy, also sold under the Inconel 600 brand, is a unique nickel-chromium alloy renowned for its oxidation resistance at high temperatures. It has a wide range of applications, from low-temperature applications to high-temperature applications up to 2000°F (1093°C).

Annealed AISI 201L is a low-carbon chromium-nickel-manganese austenitic stainless steel (AISI 201L) that has undergone annealing heat treatment. Its core characteristic is that the annealing process eliminates cold working stress, restoring the material to a soft state with low hardness and high plasticity, thus achieving excellent forming and processing properties (such as deep drawing and stretching). While maintaining the basic corrosion resistance and economic advantages of 201 stainless steel with its low nickel content, it is specifically designed for manufacturing products requiring complex forming processes, such as kitchen utensils, tableware, decorative tubing, washing machine inner tubs, and various deep-drawn and stretched parts. It is a commonly used material that balances cost, certain corrosion resistance, and excellent machinability.
Inconel 600 pipe is a high-performance pipe made of nickel-chromium-iron alloy (Inconel 600), specifically designed for transporting media in extreme high-temperature environments (up to approximately 1150°C) and highly corrosive environments (such as chlorides, alkalis, and various acidic and alkaline media). With its excellent high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance and stress corrosion cracking resistance, it is widely used in key areas such as nuclear power plant steam generators, petrochemical cracking furnaces, heat treatment equipment and chemical processes. It is a reliable solution when stainless steel cannot meet the requirements, but the cost is significantly higher.

AISI 201L (Annealed)
Material Type: Iron-based stainless steel (austenitic).
Composition: Nickel is partially replaced by manganese (Mn) and nitrogen (N); nickel content (approximately 3.5-5.5%) and chromium content are lower than those of 304 stainless steel, while manganese content is higher.
Nickel 600 (Alloy 600) (Annealed)
Material Type: Nickel alloy (not stainless steel, but with high chromium content).
Composition: High nickel (minimum 72%), chromium (14-17%), iron (6-10%).
Corrosion Resistance Comparison: Annealed AISI 201L vs. Annealed Nickel 600
| Environment / Corrosion Type | Annealed AISI 201L | Annealed Nickel 600 |
|---|---|---|
| General Principle | Good general corrosion resistance in mildly corrosive, oxidizing environments typical for a common austenitic stainless steel. | Excellent resistance in high-temperature oxidizing/alkaline environments and specific corrosive media; a premium corrosion-resistant alloy. |
| Atmospheric Corrosion | Good resistance to normal industrial and urban atmospheres. | Excellent resistance, more durable than 201L in polluted or marine atmospheres. |
| Fresh Water & Steam | Good resistance. | Excellent resistance. |
| Oxidizing Acids (e.g., Nitric) | Good resistance at moderate concentrations and temperatures. | Excellent resistance, superior to 201L in more concentrated or hotter nitric acid. |
AISI 201L (Annealed)
Properties: Good ductility, formability, and weldability; an economical alternative to 304 stainless steel.
Nickel 600 (Alloy 600) (Annealed)
Properties: Excellent corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and high temperature resistance; maintains strength even at extreme temperatures.
Key Application Comparison: Annealed AISI 201L vs. Annealed Nickel 600
