Learn about Inconel 718 alloy strip

Inconel 718 is a nickel-chromium alloy known for its exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature performance, making it suitable for demanding applications such as aerospace and oil and gas. Specifically, Inconel 718 alloy strip refers to a thin, flat form of the alloy, often used in applications requiring flexibility and formability, such as springs, valves, or aircraft engine components.

Can Inconel 718 alloy be hardened?

Alloy 718 is hardened by the precipitation of secondary phases (such as gamma and gamma duplex) within the metal matrix. These nickel (aluminum, titanium, and niobium) phases are precipitated by heat treating in the temperature range of 1100 to 1500°F (approximately 577 to 737°C).

Key Properties and Features of Inconel 718 Strip:
High Strength: Inconel 718 strip maintains its strength at both high and low temperatures, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
Corrosion Resistance: Its high nickel and chromium content provides excellent resistance to corrosion from a variety of organic and inorganic compounds, including chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking.
Heat Resistance: Its ability to withstand high temperatures makes it ideal for aerospace engine components and other high-temperature applications.
Age Hardenability: Inconel 718 strip can be strengthened through heat treatment to achieve customized mechanical properties.
Weldability: It is easily welded without significant loss of strength or cracking.
Work Hardenability: The alloy works harden rapidly, which can increase machining difficulties but can be controlled with proper processing.

Surface Treatment:
Inconel 718 strip is available in a variety of surface finishes, including:
#2D: Matt surface, suitable for deep drawing and lubricant retention.
#2B: Smooth bright surface achieved through a cold rolling and annealing process.
#BA: Bright annealed, achieved through a cold rolling and bright annealing process.
Polish: Various grit finishes are available to meet specific aesthetic or functional requirements.
