INCONEL Inconel 601 (UNS N0601 / WNr.2.4851) General engineering material
Overview
INCONEL Inconel 601 (UNS N06601/WN.2.4851) is a general engineering material suitable for applications requiring heat and corrosion resistance. An outstanding feature of INCONEL 601 alloy is its resistance to high-temperature oxidation. The alloy also has good resistance to water corrosion, has high mechanical strength, and is easy to form, process and weld. The composition is a face-centered cubic solid solution with high metallurgical stability. The alloy's nickel, combined with its high chromium content, is resistant to many corrosive media and high-temperature environments. The aluminum content further improves oxidation resistance.
The properties of INCONEL 601 alloy make it a widely used material in areas such as heat treatment, chemical processing, pollution control, aerospace and power generation.

Alloy 601 is a standard material of construction used in various types of heat treatment equipment. Industrial heating applications include baskets, trays and clamps for annealing, carburizing, carbonitriding, nitriding and other heat treatment operations. In industrial furnaces, the alloy is used in radiant tubes, muffle furnaces, steamers, fire shields, stranded corrugated fire tubes, braided wire conveyor belts, chain curtains, burner nozzles and resistive heating elements. Other heat treatment applications include thermocouple protection tubes, furnace atmosphere generators and infrared radiation screens.
Chemical processing applications for Alloy 601 include process heaters, condenser tubes in sour water strippers and insulated tanks in ammonia reformers, and the alloy is also used in burner components and catalyst grid supports in nitric acid production equipment.
In petrochemical processing, the alloy is used to make catalyst regenerators and air preheaters for high-density polyethylene. In pollution control applications, INCONEL 601 alloy is used in thermal reactors in gasoline engine exhaust systems and in combustion chambers in solid waste incinerators. In the field of power generation, 601 alloy is used in superheater tube brackets, fences and ash handling systems.
The alloy is also used in combustion can liners, diffuser components and sealing rings in jet engine igniters and gas turbines used in aircraft, industrial and vehicle applications.
Mechanical behavior
INCONEL 601 alloy has good mechanical strength. As these values indicate, the level of strength exhibited by the alloy varies with the form and condition of the material.
The optimal conditions for Alloy 601 depend on the type of application and the service temperatures involved. Typically, solution treating conditions are used in applications that limit cracking (temperatures of approximately 1000°F (540C) or higher). Annealed conditions are typically used in applications where stretch is limited (temperatures below approximately 1000°F (540C)).
Corrosion resistance
INCONEL 601 alloy's high chromium content combined with its aluminum content gives the alloy excellent resistance to high temperature corrosion mechanisms. Of particular importance is its resistance to oxidation at temperatures up to 2200°F (1200°C). Due to its chromium and aluminum content, Alloy 601 is uniquely resistant to oxide spalling under cyclic thermal conditions.
