Distinguishing between Inconel 600 and Monel 400 round bars

The main difference between Inconel 600 alloy bars and Monel 400 round bars lies in their primary alloy composition, resulting in their distinct properties: Inconel 600 bars are a nickel-chromium alloy, renowned for their high-temperature strength; while Monel 400 bars are a nickel-copper alloy, known for their corrosion resistance, especially in seawater and acidic environments. Other key differences include density, melting point, and application areas. Inconel 600 bars are used in high-temperature environments such as aerospace and nuclear reactors, while Monel 400 bars are used in marine and chemical equipment.

What are the differences between Inconel 600 and Monel 400?

Inconel 600 performs excellently in high-temperature applications due to its ability to maintain good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance even at high temperatures. Monel 400, on the other hand, is more suitable for low-temperature environments where corrosion resistance and ductility are crucial.

Inconel 600 and Monel 400

What is Inconel 600 Round Bar?

Inconel 600 round bar is a robust, reinforced composite material with excellent corrosion resistance, high weldability, and natural corrosion resistance. Its chemical composition includes carbon, nickel, manganese, silicon, iron, sulfur, chromium, and copper. Inconel 600 round bar is cast from chromium and nickel and can undergo precipitation hardening. However, due to its increased aluminum content, it exhibits superior fracture properties at high temperatures. Inconel 600 round bar also possesses good barrier properties and can withstand high-temperature environments.

What is Monel 400 Round Bar?

Monel 400 round bar is a nickel-based alloy known for its superior properties. This alloy exhibits excellent resistance to acids and alkalis. Its thermal conductivity and tensile ductility can be improved through cold working. It is also a pure alloy. Monel 400 round bar is widely used in industrial applications and is composed of copper and nickel alloys. Furthermore, it is suitable for various cold working processes. Compared to low-carbon steel and 304 stainless steel, Monel 400 round bars differ in the required machining forces and degree of work hardening. We offer Monel 400 round bars in various diameters, wall thicknesses, and sizes. Monel 400 round bars can be machined quickly using commonly used industrial machine tools. Standard machining processes are typically available.

Compared to Monel 400 round bars, Inconel 600 bars have stricter controls on harmful elements (sulfur and manganese). Sulfur and manganese have a significant negative impact on the alloy's durability and transient properties at high temperatures. Inconel 600 bars need to operate at high temperatures, therefore requiring higher purity.

Comparison of corrosion resistance of Monel alloy 400 round bars and Inconel nickel alloy 600 bars

Element Alloy 400(Seawater Corrosion) Alloy 600(High-temp Corrosion)
Ni ≥ 63.0% ≥ 72.0%
Cu 28.0% ~ 34.0% ≤ 0.50%
Cr 14.0% ~ 17.0%

The corrosion resistance of Monel Alloy 400 primarily derives from copper. Copper possesses corrosion resistance at room temperature that most metals lack, especially in flowing seawater. This corrosion resistance makes Monel Alloy 400 indispensable in marine applications. However, copper oxidizes readily at high temperatures. Therefore, Monel Alloy 400 is rarely used in high-temperature corrosion-resistant applications.

The corrosion resistance of Inconel Alloy 600 primarily derives from chromium. Chromium itself can be oxidized. However, after oxidation, chromium oxide forms a protective film on the alloy surface. This protective film isolates the oxidizing agent from the alloy, thus preventing further oxidation. This antioxidant effect remains effective at high temperatures.
