Differences between Monel Alloy 400 and Inconel Alloy 600

Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy primarily used for corrosion resistance in marine and acidic environments, while Incor Nickel 600 is a nickel-chromium alloy designed for high-temperature applications. Monel 400 performs well in resistance to seawater and non-oxidizing acids, while Incor Nickel 600 maintains its strength at high temperatures and resists oxidation and chloride stress corrosion cracking.

Will Inconel 600 rust?

It exhibits excellent resistance to corrosion from high-purity water, and no signs of chloride stress corrosion cracking were detected in the reactor water system. When used in nuclear applications, this alloy is manufactured to stringent specifications and is designated INCONEL 600T alloy.

Monel Alloy 400

Monel nickel-copper alloy 400 (UNS N04400 / W.Nr. 2.4360 and 2.4361) is a solid solution alloy that can only be hardened by cold working. It exhibits high strength and toughness over a wide temperature range and excellent corrosion resistance to a variety of corrosive environments.

Nickel Alloy 600

Nickel (nickel-chromium-iron) alloy 600 (UNS N06600 / W.Nr. 2.4816) is a standard engineering material for applications requiring corrosion and heat resistance. This alloy also possesses excellent mechanical properties, combining high strength with good machinability.

Inconel 600 vs Monel 400

Comparison of chemical composition between Monel Alloy 400 and Inconel Alloy 600

C ≤ 0.30% ≤ 0.15%
Mn ≤ 2.00% ≤ 1.00%
Si ≤ 0.50% ≤ 0.50%
S ≤ 0.024% ≤ 0.015%
Cu ≤ 0.50% -
Fe - 6.0% - 10.0%
Cr - 14.0% - 17.0%
Ni ≥ 63.0% ≥ 72.0%

Comparison of the purity of Monel Alloy 400 and Inconel Alloy 600

Element Monel 400(lose) Inconel 600(WIN)
S ≤ 0.024% ≤ 0.015%
Mn ≤ 2.00% ≤ 1.00%

Compared to Monel 400, Inconel 600 has stricter controls on harmful elements (sulfur and manganese). Sulfur and manganese have a significant negative impact on the alloy's durability and transient performance at high temperatures. Inconel 600 needs to operate at high temperatures, therefore, higher purity is required.
