Comparison of Inconel 601 and Grade 2 titanium alloys

Inconel 601 alloy performs exceptionally well under high-temperature, high-stress conditions, exhibiting excellent oxidation resistance; while Grade 2 titanium alloys are ideal for applications requiring a high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and low density. Inconel 601 alloy is heavier and typically more expensive, but it performs better at extreme temperatures (above 1000°C). Grade 2 titanium alloys are lighter and have a higher strength-to-weight ratio, making them suitable for applications in aerospace, medical devices, and marine equipment.

What is the difference between Inconel and titanium?

Inconel is a nickel-chromium-based alloy, best suited for high-temperature, high-stress, and chemically corrosive environments; while titanium is ideal for applications requiring a high strength-to-weight ratio. Inconel performs exceptionally well in extreme high-temperature and corrosive industrial environments, while titanium, due to its lightweight properties, is favored in aerospace and medical implants, although Inconel may be more suitable for some high-temperature exhaust systems.

Comparison: Inconel 601 vs. Titanium Grade 2

Feature Inconel 601 Titanium Grade 2
Key Strength High-temperature strength, oxidation and corrosion resistance High strength-to-weight ratio, lightweight
Temperature Resistance Maintains strength and resists oxidation at very high temperatures (above 1,000°C) Excellent high-temperature performance, but may not handle the most extreme heat as well as Inconel
Corrosion Resistance Exceptional resistance in high temperatures and against corrosive chemicals Excellent corrosion resistance, especially in harsh environments
Density Higher density (8.11 g/cm³) Lower density (4.51 g/cm³), about 60% of steel
Machinability More difficult to machine; requires specific tooling like carbide tools Easier to machine than Inconel but still requires care; needs sharp tools and slower speeds
Cost Generally more expensive upfront Typically less expensive upfront
Common Uses Gas turbines, chemical processing, power generation, heat treatment furnaces, muffles and retorts Aerospace components, marine equipment, pressure vessels, medical implants, chemical processing
