Compared to 310 stainless steel bolts, Inconel 600 bolts offer superior corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength, making them suitable for harsh environments such as chemical and aerospace applications despite their higher initial cost. 310 stainless steel bolts, on the other hand, are less expensive yet offer good high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance, making them more suitable for milder applications rather than extreme environments.
What are the alternatives to 310 stainless steel?
RA 253 MA contains trace amounts of cerium in addition to silicon, giving it excellent oxidation resistance at temperatures up to 2000°F (approximately 1093°C), comparable to 310 stainless steel. Due to the addition of carbon and nitrogen, RA 253 MA has more than twice the creep strength of 310 stainless steel at temperatures above 1600°F (approximately 872°C).
From a high-temperature application perspective alone, both types of bolts can withstand temperatures up to 2000°F (1093°C) and exhibit good resistance to carburization and oxidation at high temperatures. The main difference between these fasteners lies in their strength. The Inconel 600 bolt (ultimate tensile strength 93 ksi) has a significantly higher strength than the 310 stainless steel bolt (ultimate tensile strength 70 ksi). If your required strength is no more than 70 ksi, then the 310 bolt will be a more economical choice to meet your application needs.
