Alloy 925 and Alloy 718 have very different compositions. However, because Alloy 925 has similar tensile strength to Alloy 718, it is increasingly being used as a lower-cost alternative in numerous oil and gas related applications.

Alloy 925 is a nickel-based alloy, meaning that the largest element in it is nickel, which makes up 38-46% of the total. It also contains iron, chromium, and molybdenum, but in lower proportions. In comparison, Alloy 718 contains 50-55% nickel, with similar amounts of chromium and molybdenum. Since nickel is an expensive alloying addition, the increased nickel content in Inconel 718 increases its price by 20% relative to Incoloy 925.

The mechanical properties of Incoloy 925 are very similar to Inconel 718, as both achieve their high strength through precipitation strengthening. Small additions of titanium, aluminum, and niobium form fine precipitates throughout the metal when it goes through a secondary heat treatment process. These precipitates help "set" the metal's microstructure when it is subjected to external loads, thus increasing its strength and toughness.
