What Is Hastelloy C276?

What is Hastelloy C276?

Overview

HASTELLOY C276 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum wrought alloy that is considered to be the most widely used corrosion resistant alloy currently available. The alloy resists grain boundary precipitation in the weld heat affected zone and is therefore suitable for most chemical process applications in the welded condition. Alloy C-276 also has resistance to pitting, good corrosion cracking, and oxidation up to 1900°F. Alloy C-276 has good resistance to a wide range of chemical environments.

Features

HASTELLOY C276 is one of the few alloys that is resistant to wet chloride gases, hypochlorites, and chlorine dioxide solutions.

HASTELLOY C276 has good resistance to strong oxidizing salt solutions such as ferric chloride and cupric chloride.

HASTELLOY C276 is not susceptible to grain boundary precipitation in the welded condition and is therefore suitable for many chemical process applications

Applications

Digesters and bleaching plants in the paper industry.

Components exposed to acidic gases.

Flue gas desulfurization plant equipment.

Evaporators, vats, filters and mixers used in sulfuric acid environments.

Sulfuric acid reactors.

Organic chloride process equipment.

Process equipment using halide or acid catalysts.

Some typical applications for HASTELLOY C276 include equipment components in chemical and petrochemical organic chloride processes and processes using halide or acid catalysts. Other industry applications include pulp and paper (digesters and bleaching areas), scrubbers and piping for flue gas desulfurization, pharmaceutical and food processing equipment.

Hastelloy C-276 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy that has universal corrosion resistance unmatched by any other alloy. It is resistant to a wide range of chemical process environments, including ferric and cupric chlorides, hot irradiated mineral acids, solvents, chloroform and chloroform solutions (organic and inorganic), dry chlorine, sulfuric acid and alfonds, alfonds, seawater and brine solutions, and hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide solutions. Alloy C276 still resists the formation of grain boundary precipitates in the hot zone of welding and can be used in most chemical processes in the welded condition. Has good resistance to pitting corrosion and corrosion cracking.

HASTELLOY C276 plate in 0.044" thick condition heat treated at 2050°F, rapid quenched, has an average Olsen Cup depth of 0.48". Alloy C-276 can be successfully fabricated by a variety of methods. The alloy tends to harden, but with proper care, the alloy is easily hot and cold formed. Provides complete information on welding, machining and forming
