Inconel 625 Tube vs. Inconel 718 Tube - Which is Best for Your Application?
Inconel 625 seamless pipe and Inconel 718 pipe share many properties of the Inconel family. But the key difference between them is that the main property of Inconel 625 pipe is high corrosion resistance, while the main property of Inconel 718 alloy pipe is high strength. Both alloys have their own uses and cannot replace each other.

Which grade does Inconel 625 pipe belong to?
Typically, cold worked Inconel 625 seamless pipes are supplied in two conditions, Gr. 1 and Gr. 2. ASTM B444 UNS N06625 Gr 1 pipes are supplied in the annealed condition, while Gr. 2 pipes are supplied in the solution annealed condition.

Inconel 625 Tube vs. Inconel 718 Tube

Key Differences Between Inconel 625 Pipe and Inconel 718 Tube
Composition
Inconel 625 Tube: Higher molybdenum and niobium contents enhance its corrosion resistance, especially in seawater and oxidizing environments.
Inconel 718 Alloy Tube: Additional aluminum and titanium are added, increasing its strength and making it age-hardenable.
Strength
Inconel 625 pipe: has excellent tensile strength, but its strength is slightly inferior to Inconel 718 under long-term high stress conditions.
Inconel 718 pipe: Its tensile strength is better than Inconel 625, especially after heat treatment, so it is suitable for high-pressure pipe fittings.
Temperature Resistance
Inconel 625 Seamless Tube: Performs well up to 982°C (1800°F). Ideal for moderately high temperature environments.
Inconel 718 Alloy Tube: Remains stable under mechanical loads up to 704°C (1300°F), but can withstand higher temperatures with less stress.
Corrosion Resistance
Inconel 625 round pipe: performs well in environments containing chlorides, acids and oxidants, and is the first choice for pipe fittings in chemical plants and seawater systems.
Inconel 718 alloy pipe: has good corrosion resistance, but is not as good as 625 in marine or strongly acidic environments.
Weldability
Inconel 625 Tube: Easier to weld and fabricate, minimizing the risk of cracking.
Inconel 718 Alloy Tube: Can be more difficult to weld due to its age-hardening properties, but can be controlled with proper techniques.
Industries that Use Inconel 625 Tubing and 718 Tubing:
Initially used in the aerospace industry, Inconel 718 pipe has since found widespread use across the industry. One study showed that the alloy accounts for more than 30% of the mass of finished components in modern aircraft engines. One notable application area for this superalloy, which is able to withstand extreme pressures, corrosive environments, and the thrust of jet fuel, is in aerospace engines.
Component alloys in automotive engines face similarly high stress environments. The nickel content gives Inconel 718 superalloy excellent formability, benefiting a wide range of engine components. Inconel alloys are able to maintain the strong corrosion resistance required to ensure long-term durability while also meeting the unique shape requirements of automotive engine applications.
Inconel 625 pipe also has a wide range of uses in the marine industry due to its corrosion resistance, especially in environments containing sea salt. This covers requirements in the oil and gas industry, such as underwater pipeline tiebacks for downhole drilling. Other products such as telecommunications cables, propeller blades, and wire ropes can all be made from Inconel 625 and used in saltwater environments.
