What Is The Difference Between Hastelloy C4 And Hastelloy C22?

The main differences between Hastelloy C4 and C22 are their chemical composition and corrosion resistance. Hastelloy C4 is optimized for strongly reducing environments and has high thermal stability, making it well suited for applications involving hot mineral acids.

What is Hastelloy C4?

Hastelloy C-4 alloy is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy that has good resistance to oxidation and stress corrosion cracking at high temperatures. Hastelloy C-4 alloy also has excellent resistance to a variety of chemical process environments, especially hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and chlorides.

What is the difference between Hastelloy C4 and C276?

Hastelloy C4 is generally less expensive than Hastelloy C276 due to its lower carbon content and relatively simple manufacturing requirements. C276 contains more molybdenum and iron to enhance its resistance to harsh environments and is generally more expensive than C4 due to its more complex manufacturing process.

What is C276 used for?

C-276 alloy is used in many industries, including chemical and petrochemical processing, oil and gas, power generation, pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, and wastewater treatment.

Difference Between Hastelloy C4 and C22

Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of Hastelloy C4 is 65% nickel, 16% chromium, 16% molybdenum and 2% iron. Whereas the chemical composition of Hastelloy C22 is 56% nickel, 22% chromium, 13% molybdenum and 3% tungsten, with small amounts of iron, cobalt and manganese. This difference in composition determines their resistance to various corrosive media, including sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and acetic acid. Due to the addition of tungsten, Hastelloy C22 is more resistant to these media than Hastelloy C4.

Temperature Resistance

Hastelloy C4 has an upper-temperature limit of 1900°F (1038°C), while Hastelloy C22 can withstand up to 2200°F (1204°C). Therefore, if your industrial application requires exposure to extreme temperatures, C22 is the better choice.
