Differences between ASTM B167 and B775 Inconel 601 tubing

For Inconel 601 alloy, the main difference lies not in the B167 and B775 standards themselves, as both cover similar nickel-chromium alloys, but rather in the fact that the B167 standard specifies seamless tubes, while the B775 standard covers both seamless and welded tubes of this alloy. Both standards require the alloy to possess excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance and aqueous corrosion resistance, which are crucial for furnace components, heat exchangers, and chemical processing equipment requiring good mechanical strength.

What is Inconel 601?

INCONEL 601 nickel-chromium-iron alloy (UNS N06601/W.Nr. 2.4851) is a general-purpose engineering material suitable for applications requiring heat and corrosion resistance. A notable characteristic of INCONEL 601 alloy is its excellent resistance to high-temperature oxidation.

Inconel 601

ASTM B167/B775 Inconel 601 tubing contains a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with niobium, allowing it to achieve high strength without requiring strengthening heat treatment. In conditions where the corrosion and heat resistance of steel and other metals are insufficient, high-performance alloys, including ASTM B167/B775 Inconel 601 tubing, become the material of choice for designers. 601 alloy tubing is also relatively insensitive to flow rate effects and is widely used in critical components in contact with flowing acids, such as bubble caps or valves. INCONEL 601 alloy maintains excellent ductility and toughness at low temperatures.

Inconel 601 material is widely used in marine, medical, general industrial, oil and gas, nuclear and power generation, aerospace, and chemical industries. Its product forms include pipes, tubes, fittings, flanges, round bars, plates, wires, seals, fasteners, heat exchangers, valves, steam pipes, and exhaust pipes. It can also be used as a weld overlay to improve corrosion resistance.

ASTM B167 (Nickel-Chromium-Iron Alloy Seamless Tubes): This standard specifically addresses seamless tubes (without welds) for high-temperature environments, commonly used in furnace components, heat exchangers, and catalytic converters.
ASTM B775 (Nickel-Chromium-Iron Alloy Welded Tubes): This standard covers both seamless and welded tubes (with welds) of this alloy, providing a wider range of options for general engineering applications requiring high strength and corrosion resistance.
