Stainless steel grade 1.4404 contains 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel, 2-3% molybdenum, and less than 0.03% carbon. The addition of molybdenum makes this grade highly resistant to corrosion caused by chlorides, making it suitable for use in harsh environments such as marine and coastal areas. Additionally, the low carbon content of 1.4404 prevents carbide precipitation during welding, which can cause intergranular corrosion.
