Monel 400/Alloy 400
Alloy 400 (UNS No. N04400) is a nickel-copper solid solution alloy with small additions of manganese, silicon, and iron to increase its strength and corrosion resistance. It exhibits high strength over a wide temperature range.

Monel/Alloy 400 Round Bar Stacking

Alloy 400 has excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments, from mildly oxidizing to neutral and moderately reducing conditions. Alloy 400 also performs well in marine and other non-oxidizing chloride solutions.

Alloy 400 is also extremely resistant to stress corrosion cracking and pitting in most fresh and industrial waters.

In the annealed condition, it is easily formed and fabricated, and its mechanical properties can be enhanced by tempering or cold working.

Columbia Metals is a leading supplier and distributor of Alloy 400, with standard offerings in the cold worked and stress relieved conditions. This condition ensures the highest mechanical strength, best machinability and the best surface condition to meet the needs of the final application.

Alloy 400 (N04400) Standards and Specifications
Alloy 400 (Monel 400) is published as NA13, under British Standard BS3076, and as UNS N04400, under American Standard ASTM B164. The term Monel refers to a registered trademark alloy that was first developed in 1905 when Ambrose Monell was president of the International Nickel Company. The ASTM and BS specifications and the term Alloy 400 are equivalent to Monel 400.

Corrosion Resistance
Alloy 400 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance to hydrofluoric acid and a variety of reducing media, and outperforms high copper alloys in oxidizing media. It is one of the few alloys that can be used in contact with fluorine and hydrogen fluoride. Alloy 400 has strong corrosion resistance to various forms of sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and alkaline substances under reducing conditions. Alloy 400 also has good resistance to stress corrosion cracking and pitting in most fresh water and industrial water, and also shows excellent corrosion resistance in flowing seawater, so it is widely used in chemical and marine engineering fields.
