ASTM B165 UNS N04400 Nickel-Copper Alloy Cold-Worked Seamless Pipe

ASTM B165 UNS N04400 cold-worked seamless pipe is a high-strength nickel-copper alloy (Monel 400) known for its excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in seawater and various acidic solutions. "Cold-worked" refers to strengthening through mechanical working rather than heat treatment, which increases yield and tensile strength. It is widely used in the offshore, chemical processing, and oil and gas industries, and can be welded using a variety of welding techniques.

What is N04400 material?

UNS N04400 is the designation for Monel alloy 400. This nickel-copper alloy is renowned for its exceptional corrosion resistance in a wide range of corrosive conditions, including seawater, sulfuric acid, and alkaline solutions. This solid solution alloy, primarily composed of nickel and copper, offers high strength, good weldability, and maintains its properties over a wide temperature range, making it suitable for use in the marine, chemical processing, and oil and gas industries.

Cold-Worked Seamless Pipe
Seamless: Manufactured without any welded joints, it offers superior structural integrity and leak-proof properties.
Cold Working: The cold working process involves deforming the pipe at room temperature to achieve a fine-grained structure, thereby increasing its strength.
As-Finished: Available in the cold-worked condition (higher strength than the annealed condition) or the cold-worked and annealed condition.

Fabrication and Welding
Welding: Before welding, thoroughly remove any foreign matter from the surface, such as cutting fluids and grease.
Stress Relief: Solution annealing may be required after welding to relieve internal stresses.
Work Hardening: Monel 400 hardens rapidly, making machining more difficult after the initial pass.
Caution: This material is susceptible to rapid attack by nitric acid and ammonia systems.

Standards and Testing
Standards: ASTM B165 covers material and fabrication requirements.
Testing: This includes tensile, hydrostatic, and nondestructive electrical testing.
Certification: Manufacturer certification of compliance with this specification may be required.
